Knowing your “hodos” makes all the diffference…

“Hodos” is a Greek word, and it makes all the difference to how you follow Jesus as His disciple. A revelation of it and will have radidcal implications on your life. In a world where popular culture, empty philosophy, false teachings, huge peer pressure, controlling leaders, the devil himself, etc all have an agenda for how you should live, it’s your “hodos” that will determine whether you will go with the flow, or follow through the crowd. As a leader, it is critical that you are clear about your hodos, because if you don’t know it, you can’t show it, resulting in people wandering all over the place instead of purposefully pursuing a mission together. Jesus knew His “hodus”. So what is it?

We can best see it in Paul’s letter to the Corinthian church, which is facing great pressure from the culture its in, and problems are breaking out everywhere. One way Paul will help them is to send Timothy to them on a special assignment:

For this reason I have sent to you Timothy, my son whom I love, who is faithful in the Lord. He will remind you of my way of life in Christ Jesus, which agrees with what I teach everywhere in every church. 1 Corinthians 4:17

So hodos is the “way” – the “way of life”. Paul instructs Timothy to remind them of “my way in Christ”. Notice he doesnt say “the way in Christ”. Discipleship is the process of my way becoming more and more like His way. Conforming my “hodos” to His “hodos”. In this message on Youtube below I share with you the importance of knowing your hodos, and remind you of three things:

  1. The “hodos” – Jesus is the way, our “hodos”. If you dont know the Way, you cant go follow the Way.
  2. Our “hodos” – Every church, family, organisation etc has a “hodos”. Knowing the “hodos” of what you are part of is critical to how your walk together in agreement or not. Again, as I said above, as a leader it is critical that you are clear about your hodos, because if you don’t know it, you can’t show it, resulting in people wandering all over the place instead of purposefully pursuing a mission together.
  3. Your “hodos” – consider yours and develop it to become one who can truly walk victoriously in the “hodos” of Jesus Christ. Make His way your way, and walk confidently through the crowd as you follow jesus!
