Yesterday while enjoying the great city celebrating Al’s 50th birthday. I bumped into this hero, Robert Raikes (14 September 1736 – 5 April 1811). He was an English philanthropist and Anglican layman, noted for his promotion of Sunday schools. That may not seem like something significant to everyone, but this pre-dates state schooling and by 1831 1,250,000 children were being schooled through what he started.
