Lately I’ve been doing a series of messages on “Overcoming in life” – In John 16: 33 Jesus says: “I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.” “In this world we will have trouble” – Its not a promise – just a reality of this life…
To “Overcome” means to: conquer; get the victory; come off victorious; To win your case in law, to maintain ones cause; to prevail; to triumph; be victorious; of Christians, it means that they hold fast to their faith even unto death against the powers of their enemies, and temptations and persecutions. We need more of that!
Its one thing to have a “theology of breakthrough” which believes that every mountain in your way will move, but I do believe we also need a theology of “overcoming faith” which enable us to rise above and overcome the “troubles” we face in this real broken world. This is what this series is about, to empower us with some “overcoming truths” by the “Christ in us” who is “greater than He that is in the world.”
Here are overcoming truths numbers 4, 5 & 6 (you can listen to the message on downloads at www.everynation.co.uk):
Overcoming Truth 4: Get up is always an option…
In Christ, there is always another chance – Proverbs 24:16 …for though a righteous man falls seven times, he rises again, but the wicked are brought down by calamity.
Overcoming Truth 5: The secret is in the stride…
For some reason I can’t upload the image for this point, but its one of a runners hurling sequence, and this point is that we can overcome anything if we get into a “stride” rather that reacting only when trouble comes. Read 2 Peter 1, and see verse 10 For if you do these things, you will never fall.. Stride = running so you feel you can make it all the way to the finish…Stride is about mastering the basics…Champions are those who have mastered the basics, and return CONSISTENT performances… What you do consistently will determine what you experience consistently…
Overcoming Truth 6: Keep the end in mind
A question all of us must ask ourselves, is “what am I doing this for?” What is my faith really about? Do I have the real goal in mind? After “if you do these things” …. we are reminded of the “why”: ….you will receive a rich welcome into the eternal kingdom of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
Thats worth overcoming for. You can be an overcomer in Christ….We continue on Sunday the 24th June with the next Overcoming truth, which is: “Travel light” – and it will be translated live into Polish!
Wolfi,
It’s great to have previews, it will give me more time to assimilate and meditate on what you share on Sundays. Very good idea. It’s also good for “revision”, if I want to go back to it.
Cheers,
Sergio
